Demerit Points - VicRoads

When driving on our roads, you must follow the traffic rules. If you break any of the rules, you may receive demerit points.

A demerit point is a penalty for committing a traffic offence. The number of points youll get depends on the type of traffic offence you have committed. Youll find a list of offences and their demerit point value on our website.

Demerit points are recorded against your driver licence or learner permit and remain recorded for three years. Also, along with the demerit points, youll receive a fine.

More importantly, if you receive too many demerit points, you may lose your driver licence or learner permit.

Now, if you do end up getting demerit points, you will need to know the following:

VicRoads will send you a letter which lists how many demerit points you have accumulated, as well as the details of each offence.

If you hold a learner permit or a probationary driver license and you get five or more demerit points in any 12 month period; or if you hold a full driver licence and get 12 or more demerit points in any 3 year period, your driver licence or learner permit may be suspended.

If you reach the demerit point limit, youll be sent an Option Notice with two options to choose from.


Option 1
Will allow you to keep your learner permit or drivers licence, but if you receive more demerit points during the next 12 month period, your driver licence or learner permit will be suspended for twice as long as it would have been suspended under Option 2.

Option 2
If you hold a driver licence or a learner permit and you reach your demerit point limit, you can opt to have it suspended for three months, and then an extra one month for every additional four points.

So, lets hope you never have to deal with demerit points. Drive carefully.

Riding with lions road rules

From 9 November 2009, Victoria introduced some changes to its road safety rules. The changes improve road safety and help make the rules more consistent across Australia. The changes affect all Victorian road users. There are new rules for child restraints, mobile phones and visual display units, U-turns and overtaking, seatbelts, parking, motorcycle passengers and driving with trams.
